Miller Proctor Nickolas, Inc. ("MPN" or "MPN Boilers"), a 100% employee-owned leader in heating solutions and services for the New York City metro area, won the Empire Technology Prize last month, securing the $1 million grand prize for its innovative steam generating water source heat pump by Oilon ChillHeat.
Administered by The Clean Fight New York and championed by Governor Kathy Hochul, the Empire Technology Prize identified and accelerated transformative technologies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from heating, the largest single source of emissions in New York City's high-rise buildings.
The competition drew global innovators, with MPN standing out for its deep understanding of local challenges, including steam distribution in historic structures and how to navigate the NYC landscape with over 60 years of experience in the area.
After more than two years of rigorous competition, MPN advanced through Level 4 of the prize, culminating in a fully functional demonstration trailer showcased at iconic sites like the Empire State Building and being selected as the sole winner of the prize. This groundbreaking technology was easily packaged inside a mobile trailer and is able to product steam without the use of carbon based fuels.
This victory recognized MPN's pioneering approach to converting waste heat into steam without fossil fuels, addressing one of New York City's most pressing challenges: decarbonizing tall buildings and meeting aggressive emissions reduction mandates like Local Law 97.
