This page aims to answer the questions we’re asked most regularly about energy-efficient boilers, the pros and cons of upgrading, and what kind of thermal efficiency levels you can expect.

Energy Efficient Boilers For Your Business

How does a high-efficiency boiler work?

A high-efficiency boiler, also known as a condensing boiler, works in the same way as a regular boiler but is designed to capture more of the heat energy and direct it back into your living or working space.

High-efficiency boilers allow you to lower the carbon footprint of your business while still keeping your buildings warm.

How much more efficient is a new boiler?

Modern boiler systems are capable of an efficiency rate of over 95%, converting almost all of the available fuel into heat. A typical older boiler system, using fossil fuels, is capable of fuel efficiency rates of between 50% and 70%.

If your boiler is more than 20 years old, you can be almost certain that it operates at a lower efficiency level.

Why are old boilers less efficient?

Older boilers can become less efficient because of an older design and the use of now-outdated technology, soot and scale buildup inside the boiler, an outdated control system, the lack of a high-efficiency condensing function, single-stage firing or lack of modulated firing, and just the normal wear and tear that any boiler system experiences with passing years.

Are energy-efficient boilers tax deductible?

Your business might qualify for a tax deduction based on improving the energy efficiency of commercial buildings. This can range from savings of $0.50 per square foot to a maximum of $1 per square foot. Full details are available in this IRS document.

How much does an energy-efficient boiler cost in NYC?

There’s no one answer to this question because the final cost is based on the size of a project and how much of the existing equipment or controls need to be upgraded.

MPN stocks a full range of energy-efficient boilers from leading brand names such as Oilon, Cleaver-Brooks, and Raypak.

What are the disadvantages of a high-efficiency boiler?

A high-efficiency boiler is the more cost-effective solution in the long term, but in the short term, you face slightly higher upfront costs and more specific installation requirements vs. much older boiler systems.

With that said a high-efficiency boiler can reduce your overall heating costs by up to 35% per year, so this is an investment in your energy future and not an expense.
